First Timers Guide to Carnivals Onboard Activities

carnival cruise stuff to do

The steakhouse is the fanciest restaurant onboard for all your night-out needs. Carnival Vista set sail on July 3 from Galveston, the first Carnival ship to debut U.S.-based cruises since the pandemic shut down cruising in 2020. The popular ship is one of the line’s newest, and was the first to debut innovative attractions, such as Havana and Family Harbor cabins, the SkyRide, an IMAX movie, and an onboard brewery. Waiting lines formed well before showtimes, with multiple shows offered daily. Many guests in our group planned their evenings around The Punchliner Comedy Club shows throughout the cruise. If you like these kinds of food stalls, don’t miss having lobster rolls at the Seafood Shack (available for an extra charge) and the free shawarma station and hot dog stations in the Lido Marketplace.

Marina Bar

The free Seaday Brunch is held in Mardi Gras’ main dining room, and it was as great as ever. Carnival Jubilee has five pools onboard, the biggest of which is located on the lido deck, Deck 16. This is where the bulk of activities take place, and it’s often busy, especially on sea days.

Dining and restaurants

When programming isn’t offered, teens and tweens might hang, play video games on their own or use the clubs as a meeting place for new friends before heading off on their own. Carnival’s free Hub app is almost a requirement when you’re sailing on Jubilee. You don’t HAVE to have it, but it will make everything much easier. The app offers the daily schedule, allows you to select favorite activities, make reservations and look at menus for each restaurant.

A traditional lounge atmosphere combined with the high energy found onboard, this lounge delivers the best in all types of entertainment, from comedy to music and everything in between. You’ll do more than just pass the time as you sail from port to port. The fun continues when you reach your port — there’s a huge variety of shore excursions to choose from. You’re about to discover just what awaits you on a Carnival cruise.

You should book cruise events such as comedy shows and concerts early to get the best sits in the house. Most of the shows on Carnival are free and don’t need booking but when it comes to Carnival LIVE sailings then it would be good to get those tickets early. If you know your port of call well, venture into it and buy souvenirs from local grocery stores where prices are not hiked. Also, wait for souvenir sale offs and discount deals at the ship’s gift shop.

The Conquest class debuted in 2002 with the introduction of Carnival Conquest. Sister ships to follow included Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty and Carnival Freedom. All of the ships are 110,000 GT and are considered slightly larger versions of Carnival’s Destiny class. If you do want to expand your dining experiences during a Carnival Liberty cruise beyond just the complimentary eateries, you’ll have a good handful of selections in that instance, too. The captain’s suites have definitely been upgraded to a greater degree than the general staterooms and other suites, and offer a slightly more refined, upscale aesthetic.

These aren’t your small, dark gyms like you might find in a hotel. Carnival’s pizza parlor is the Pizzeria Del Capitano (known as Pizza Pirate on some ships). It serves up handmade pies that are made fresh around the clock. There are only a few types of pie served (pepperoni, margherita, cheese, and a couple more), but they are absolutely delicious.

Carnival Jubilee cabins and suites

Carnival Jubilee offers the same ride — the third of its kind on a cruise ship — in the deck 18, 19 and 20 Ultimate Playground area. Outside, the area continues with The Patio, which features a pool and hot tubs, and neighboring The Watering Hole, a bar that serves the space. At Camp Ocean, kids from ages 2 to 11 enjoy activities both educational and just for fun, all led by trained instructors.

After 300 plus cruises, I can attest that the wifi on board Carnival Celebration is by far the best I’ve ever experienced on any ship and that even includes Princess’ Medallion Class. I also found that the single device rule was actually quite easy to negotiate, with a simple click or two to disable one device and activate another. Many venues have their own themed menus, which makes bar hopping on this mega ship even more fun. Stingrays (ages 6 to 8) might participate in dance classes, jewelry making, speed stacking, trivia and video games.

The cabin television sets don’t have a lot of options when it comes to watching sports. So if you want to watch the game, then you’re going to need to visit the casino, or the SkyBox Sports Bar. SkyBox offers a sports-themed atmosphere, complete with several TV sets showing the action. You can sit, watch the game and enjoy a beer (or other libation) with other sports fans.

However, the premium vista balcony staterooms stand apart with multiple windows and bigger, better views, so they’re the way to go if you want more space and better scenery, without the suite price tag. Ocean view staterooms are slightly larger and include sitting areas and big, rectangular windows along the far wall of each cabin. Otherwise, the decor and aesthetic are the same as what you’ll find in interior staterooms. All about the Carnival Liberty cruise ship, the first to receive the popular FUN 2.0 upgrades, with an overview, things to do, and itineraries.

Camp Ocean is divided into three groups for children ages 2 to 11, with age-specific activities (crafts, sports, games, etc.), a Deck 11 indoor-outdoor play space and Dr. Seuss reading room. The key to trying it all on Carnival Vista is to read up on the dining options. You might be surprised to discover that the BlueIguana Cantina serves a yummy breakfast burrito or that Cucina del Capitano offers a pasta lunch for free (even though you have to pay extra for dinner). And, yes, you can track down a veggie burger on the pool deck and load it up from the Guy’s Burger Joint toppings bar – just like the meat eaters in your travel party. One of my favorite things about sea days on a Carnival cruise ship is enjoying a relaxing Seaday Brunch.

The casino isn’t open when in port, but once in international waters you can play. Activities here are less structured, and participants can come and go as they please. My favorite onboard dining experience of the whole sailing was at Emeril's Bistro 717 in the Currents zone on Deck 6. A version of this chef Emeril Lagasse-affiliated spot is on each of Carnival's Excel Class ships, bearing the hull number of the original vessel for which the new one is named.

The ship was initially ordered in 2016, before construction started in 2021. The ship was built by Meyer Turku in Finland at a cost of $1 billion. She is the second in the fleet fully powered by Liquefied Natural Gas LNG. A staple of many cruises is a take on The Newlywed Game, which on Carnival is known as the “Love & Marriage” game show. Here, three couples are selected from the audience as contestants. Then, they separated and asked private questions about each other and their marriage, where they must match the answers given by their spouse.

In the evenings new release movies are shown on the large video board that towers over the pool. You can hang out and relax under stars, taking in a flick in one of the most perfect settings imaginable. Typically on the other side of the ship’s pool deck from Guy’s Burger Joint is the BlueIguana Cantina, which serves up Mexican food.
